Popular stage, TV and film actress Christina Applegate shocked the world recently by making a public statement that she is battling breast cancer at age 36. Ms. Applegate’s mother is herself a survivor of both breast and cervical cancer, and Ms. Applegate has always promoted the importance of being aware of one’s health, particularly in light of her own family history.

When a family history of breast cancer is known, many doctors now suggest that regular mammograms begin not at 40, but significantly younger to encourage early detection and prevention of the disease.
